Queering Club Sports

“How might we make club sports at Carnegie Mellon more inclusive to non-binary students?” This is the question which fueled a semester long group project based in design research methods.

My group and I first analyzed the problem space by conducting interviews with stakeholders involved in club sports from students to administration. We then developed a possible intervention to make sports more inclusive through educating cisgender athletes on how to be welcoming to non-binary teammates. We conducted a participatory design workshop with both team captains and non-binary students to understand exactly what information needed to be communicated and what actions captains could realistically take to make club sports more inclusive. We synthesized all of these findings into a simple handbook for captains titled “Making your team gender inclusive.”

This work helped me win the Victory Ng Design Impact Award.
